Tender Heart
I am so happy that my daughter-in-law, Tanisha, has started going with us to serve the homeless in Knoxville. The last two times we've gone, she brought Nicholas, our seven-year-old grandson with her. He has had a blast! In September, he was oftentimes right by my side, making sure that the person I was talking to had the drink he or she wanted.
This past Sunday, during our visit to Knoxville, we met a family of five who is currently without a home. Lost employment ended up with losing their place to live. Mom, Dad, two little girls and a little boy sat together on a blanket having a picnic. Some of our students learned that one of the little girls was celebrating her birthday that day and the other would celebrate hers in two days, so we all sang — including those who live on the streets — Happy Birthday to the girls.
During this time, Nick worked and played, romped and wrestled and chatted with students and homeless folks. I know he sees the people, but I didn't truly understand how deeply he grasps what's going on there.
When we were headed back home, Tanisha sent a text message to my phone that brought tears to my eyes.
Nick is asking if we can go get that family and let them live with us and if we can take the little girls a cake this week for their birthday.
God, help me to have a heart that tender and loving.
