Is he right?

Bigsmallheader On August 21st, Scott Williams wrote a poem that he posted on his blog, Big is the New Small. It was written as a person who doesn't go to church writing to the church saying why he doesn't even want to go to church.

That day, I bragged on our church a bit as I am often wont to do.

"I’m happy to say that while there ARE those who probably feel that about our church, there are those who have experienced the absolute opposite. Just ask the former prostitute, the addicts, felons, agnostics & the atheist…

When we talk in our leadership meetings, it’s usually unanimous, the one thing that we excel at is helping people feel accepted. We’ve heard that from different folks over the past six years. That’s pretty cool."

I noticed today that Scott had posted a comment from a person identified only as "Hulk" and it mentioned my comment. You can read the whole thing here

"So instead of embracing truth and honesty, they are locked away in a lonely closet. They want to change, they want to be accepted for who THEY REALLY ARE, but that can’t be found in the church! They are too busy pretending and judging.

Faye, your church is just like that. You may be welcoming (an evangelistic technique), but what about being real? Church by definition is like that. There is no escape. Churches are filled with modern day Pharisees. The Pharisees today just litter their talk with WORDS like, grace, forgiveness, Jesus, acceptance, but it is all based on performance, position and recognition."

I replied to Hulk, sharing my thoughts about our church. You'll find that right below his

My question remains: Is he right?

One Response to “Is he right?”

  1. Faye, I believe that you are both RIGHT. There are many churches who make you feel as though you don’t measure up…or that you aren’t doing the “God thing” the right way. But there are churches…few and far between whose welcoming love draws in the people that God needs them to reach. Your church sounds like a great church. I love the fact that you mentioned that you are involved in your community. That is what “church” should be about. Spreading His love to those who need it and desire it. I hope to have the honor of one day being in Townsend, TN and visiting your church. Until then, press on…
