Rachel’s Tears
March 14, 2009
Ten
years ago, my husband and I were planning for a trip to Florida. We’d
signed up for one of those delicious time-share tour “vacations” and
planned our trip around it. Spending a few nights in the Plaza Inn in
Daytona Beach was going to be nice, followed up by a couple nights in
St. Augustine, both places I’ve loved since my childhood. April came
and to Florida we went.
Once
in St. Augustine, we were preparing to go tour the city that fateful
day when we flipped through the TV channels. Sightseeing was delayed by
the tragedy we saw unfolding on the screen. Children running from their
school with the voiceovers talking about shots fired, people dead and
injured.
Among the 13 killed that day was Rachel Joy Scott of whom this book is written.
Rachel’s parents, Beth Nimmo and Darrell Scott, open their hearts and lives to
share their beautiful daugher with the rest of us. They share their
faults and failures along with Rachel’s journey.
I can’t
imagine the pain they’ve suffered or the joys they’ve experienced through the reading her journals and other notes. As I have read the thoughts in this
lovely teen-age girl’s diaries, I am amazed at the depth of her
understanding and her faith. Incredible for an adult, almost unheard of
in a teen.
This book serves not only as a memoir but a challenge to teens as well as adults. A definite must-read.
